Deadmau5: Grammy Nods, Signing Skrillex and Taking 'Crazy-Ass Leaps'

"Grammys? It's cool. Electronic music's ripped a f---ing giant new ---hole in that thing, eh?"

So sayeth Deadmau5, the Canadian superstar DJ/producer also known as Joel Zimmerman who is not only up for three Grammy Awards at this year's ceremony -- including Best Dance/Electronica Album for '4x4=12,' Best Dance Recording for 'Raise Your Weapon' and Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical for his revamp of Foo Fighters' 'Rope' -- but will also be performing with the Foos in the Grammys' first-ever inclusion of dance music in the televised broadcast.

"Before we were commercial break motherf---ers. That's good for all electronic music, not just me -- it's all about the bigger picture," Deadmau5 told Spinner at this week's announcement of the Juno nominations, the Canadian music awards where he's up for not just best dance recording but also Artist of the Year and the populist Fan Choice Award.

Mux Mool Won't Mess With Drake, Lil Wayne or Any of That 'Pop S---'

Tim Saccent

As genre-defying Minnesota-born, Brooklyn-based visual artist/producer Mux Mool prepares to release his sophomore LP, 'Planet High School,' he sat down with Spinner/RPM to discuss his beautiful, frenetic collection of melancholic synth-funk instrumentals, the fate of America's youth, his pursuit of happiness and why he'd rather remix Smokey Robinson than Lil Wayne or Drake.

What does the title 'Planet High School' refer to?

It's about growing up, or not growing up, rather. It's about how I kinda grew up too fast and was miserable all my life until I was maybe 24, and now I don't have to grow up ever. Not like, some Peter Pan s--- or anything, just that I can wear t-shirts for the rest of my life if I want and I'm still stoked on eating cookies for breakfast if I want.

Grammy Awards 2012: Dance Music Makes Broadcast, Deadmau5/Foo Fighters Duet

Grammy show producer Ken Ehrlich had considered putting dancing/electronica music into the ceremony in the past, but could never quite figure out how to incorporate the high-energy club feel in front of a sometimes staid audience.

He thinks he's figured it out this year. For the first time, the Grammy show will put the spotlight on the genre with a segment featuring Grammy nominees Deadmau5, the Foo Fighters, Chris Brown, David Guetta and Lil Wayne, all performing in a tent space amid 1,000 fans.

"We decided to go all out this year," Ehrlich said of the performance taking place outside the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where Sunday's ceremony will be held. "All we're going to try and do next week is to try and put the home audience in the middle of it. ... It is more than just sitting there and watching it."

Juno Awards 2012: Drake, Deadmau5, Feist Dominate Nominations

  • Posted on Feb 7th 2012 1:05PM by Joshua Ostroff

Deadmau5Josh Ostroff, AOL

Another year, another Juno nominees list that reads like the actual year in music -- and not just Canadian music -- with nominations for the April 1 William Shatner-hosted award show going to North America's biggest stars, from Drake and DeadMau5 to Justin Bieber and Michael Buble to Feist and F---ed Up. (And, yes, to Nickelback and somehow Avril, too).

The latter are a reminder of how ridiculous the Juno Awards used to be. They were often called the Canadian Grammys -- except there was rarely any crossover between the nominees lists -- and the Junos inability to recognize the surging early-2000s indie scene inspired the creation of the Polaris Prize to award the actual best Canadian album. Sales were all that mattered for the big awards which prized quantity over quality.

Of course, sales still matter -- the top awards remain restricted to artists who pass certain quotas -- but the difference is that, for the most part, the best Canadians are also major sellers. As well, the alternative categories now read like a Polaris shortlist -- not to mention reading like many New York music critics' year-end lists.

James Blake Plots Tibet House Collaborations With Laurie Anderson, Rahzel

Irreverent up-and-coming hip-hop act Das Racist and dubstep-inspired singer-songwriter James Blake will share the stage with avant-garde legends Philip Glass, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson at the 22nd Annual Tibet House Benefit at Carnegie Hall on Feb. 13.

The lineup, which also features Antony Hegarty, Stephin Merritt and Rahzel, was curated by Glass, who recently celebrated his 75th birthday in commemoration of the Monlam Prayer Festival, which traditionally takes place at the Tibetan New Year.

In preparation for his performance, Blake tells Spinner/RPM that he's taken time off to "hibernate" for the first time since his cover of Feist's 'Limit to Your Love' propelled him to stardom.
